Your Westwood Fire Damaged Home is Restored by SERVPRO

Westwood fire damage is something that no one wants to experience. However, if you find yourself in this unfortunate situation, here are several tips to help you get through the situation.

Understand that you cannot reenter the structure until it has been declared safe by the fire authorities. You may be barred from entering if the damage is too severe. While it may be tempting to try to get in and salvage things, do not do this until you have permission to do so. Once you have approval, ask if any utilities can be used.

Contact your insurance agency. An adjuster will be sent out within a day or two to assess the damage and offer an estimate. Press for immediate assessment. Request from the insurance company if they have a specific company they want to come out for boarding up and securing the scene before the adjuster arrives. If not, make them aware that you plan to contact one yourself. SERVPRO is a good choice though your adjuster may have suggested this to you. The adjustor will:
Clearly identify what your insurance will and won’t cover. If there is anything you are unsure about, ask.

Bring in licensed professionals to evaluate everything from the roof to windows, electrical circuits, wiring, pipes, heating and cooling system, water heaters, and more for smoke and fire damage.

Make a list of items damaged in the fire. Notate for yourself how old the items were and what you paid for them. Take photos of the damage, if you can gain access.

Help you find temporary housing, whether in a hotel, apartment complex, or even a travel trailer that is put on your property. The adjuster may be able to issue a small check to help you with personal items and clothing lost in the fire. The American Red Cross is an excellent source of assistance.

If the insurance company doesn’t send one, contact a professional fire restoration company to secure the scene. This needs to be done the night of the fire to ensure no one can get into your property. This may require that your doors and windows be boarded up, and caution tape (or even some form of barrier fence) may be put up around the home’s perimeter. SERVPRO is available 24/7 for emergency service.

After the insurance adjuster has viewed the property, the fire restoration company can come in and begin their work. This includes moving any salvageable furniture, clothing, photos, personal items, etc. from the scene into a warehouse where it can be professionally sanitized and cleaned.

A decision will need to be made regarding repairing or rebuilding the property. This will depend on the extent of the damage, the scope/ cost of the repairs, whether the home carries a mortgage or is paid for, and what insurance coverage you have. In most cases, the insurance company will make the final decision regarding a total loss. Bear in mind, this is only in the case of extreme fire damage to the structure.

Unfortunately, fires do not discriminate. If you are the victim of a house fire and your Westwood home has suffered grave fire damage use the information above to help you get through the aftermath. SERVPRO can work with you and your insurance company to expedite the fire damaging restoration and save you money. We will work to get you back home "Like it never even happened."
